In a follow-up to a small scale study performed last year, Hemp Cleans researchers are planning a larger scale study for the summer of 2013. Approximately ten hemp plants will be grown in soil contaminated by gold mining waste. An additional ten plants will be grown in clean soil as controls. This research will provide useful data for the state of Colorado generally but specifically for the Phytoremediation Pilot Program Commmittee.
Jennifer Cappa, a PhD candidate from Colorado State University, will be one of the lead researchers on the project. Ms. Cappa is currently focused on PhD research concerning the uptake of selenium by plants in Colorado soils. Selenium is a naturally-occurring contaminate of concern which can be toxic to wildlife and livestock at high levels.
Hemp Cleans is currently involved in sourcing funding for this project.
